Mentoring Program

Every student at MIT has one mentor. Mentoring Program at MIT involves academic guidance to students and social support. Throughout this process, academic mentors guides their mentees and teach strategies for managing conflicts and coach them on setting short-term and long-term goals.

Academic Advising

At MIT, Academic Advisers at MIT not only focuses on student learning and educational experiences, but seeks to connect student’s academic interests and skills with their personal and career ambitions. In MIT, Academic advising has many goals and typically operates in the best interests of students. However, the personal goals of advisers along with departmental and institutional priorities may compromise this focus, often without the awareness or certainly the intention of advisers. The developmental model of advising not only focuses on student learning and educational experiences, but seeks to connect student’s academic interests and skills with their personal and career ambitions.

Career Counseling

Career strategies and tools used with students include facilitating educational career panels and networking events, providing occupational information via technology, taking career treks to businesses and organizations, and providing self-assessment tools and one-on-one career counseling relationships. Interventions, such as role playing used for practicing interviews, preparing to talk to employers, and learning how to address potentially uncomfortable conversations.
